This project centered around transforming the lower levels of the Central Anchorage of the Bay Bridge into a spa connecting to the bay. 270,000 vehicles pass over the Oakland Bay Bridge every day, unbeknownst to them under their tires lies the chasm of the central anchorage. Currently there is no public access to this space, very few people have ever been inside, yet it inhabits a great opportunity in the bay. It represents the moment of transition from an engineered structure to the bay, a physical transition and connection from one world to another. The act of bathing and of interacting with water in the spa reconnects us with the bay and provides a moment of respite and retreat from the ever present city. Using the sculptures of Donald Judd and the idea of the stark southwestern desert landscape that he found most conducive to his work, this spa centers around the idea of escape from a crowded landscape to a simple & naturally illuminated space.
